Road Accident – The Next Steps….

Involved in a Motor accident? Aiyah! F@** The arsehole doesn’t know how to drive….. Either you are angry and cursing or in state of a shocker… But you need to face it!

Let me, as an insurance practitioner takes you through a simple process – at least to help yourself deal with the unpleasantness or trauma of an accident :)

It can be a nasty accident, but it is an art dealing with the aftermath of it!

What do you REALLY need to do next? Here are some real and practical guidelines that you may be very useful in times like this:

  1. Try not to panic and calm yourself down – take a deep breath!
  2. If there are any injuries involved, immediately call 999 and call for ambulance/fire engine/police, including your Auto-Assist service provider
  3. The tow-truck man can be a very important person when getting the necessary assistance – however it is good to contact your agent or your insurer’s toll-free line Auto-assist (usually your insurer should have provided you with one to be sticked onto your windscreen)
  4. If no injuries, move your vehicle to a safe area away from the traffic. Malaysians are generally a helpful lot to help move your car.
  5. Not the model (i.e Proton Saga) and vehicle registration number (i.e. WNAxxxx) involved
  6. If necessary calm down the other party if you think you are at fault….. but short of accepting that you are actually at fault! Taking away any direct confrontational approach by either party helps alot
  7. Take a note of the names and addresses of the other driver(s) involved in the accident
  8. Call someone, a friend or a family member/relative whom you think are nearby to be with you
  9. Note the name and addresses of witnesses (if there are any)
  10. If you are good in drawing, try sketch out a simple diagram of how the accident happened, the position of the vehicles before and after the accident
In A Nutshell
  1. No Confrontational Approach
  2. Your Auto-Assist Service Provider is the most important people – Call them for assist – the tow-truck personnel should be around to assist you
  3. Always have the list of panel workshop authorised by your insurer kept in the car – Your vehicle must be sent to any of the authorised workshop listed
  4. Do contact your agent for verification
